GCSC Seminar: Joerg Schaefer “Ice Sheets, Glaciers and Society: past and present cryospheric change and its impact on society”

January 17, 2017 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm MST

“Ice Sheets, Glaciers and Society: past and present cryospheric change and its impact on society” Joerg Schaefer, Columbia University, Earth & Environmental Sciences. 4:00 pm, 210 ASB

The response of ice-sheets and mountain glaciers to changing climate has become a forefront problem in Earth Sciences, relevant for our society in a warming world. Fluctuating ice-sheet and mountain glaciers have left a rich geological record that has been difficult to date until the advent of Œcosmogenic nuclide science in the mid of the 20th century. In this seminar, Dr. Schaefer attempts to give an update about recent progress and remaining limitations of the cosmogenic nuclide technique and highlight its critical role to evaluate past ice-sheet and glacier changes from millions of years ago to present day. He will present results from ongoing studies in Greenland, New Zealand and Bhutan contributing to discussions about polar ice-sheet stability, inter-hemispheric climate patterns of the last ice-age and its termination, and recent glacier and climate change in Central Asia and its impact on societies.
