The COVID-19 pandemic coupled with climate change presents significant challenges to cities around the world. Yet, much of the contemporary urban planning paradigm still rely on conventional approaches to urban development focused on automobility and maintaining the status quo. There is a critical need for more transformative and integrated approaches to urban and transportation planning that place health, resilience, and equity at the center of decision-making. This requires new thinking on urban planning and the types of infrastructure that should be put in place to ensure a fast recovery from the pandemic while serving as vehicles for improving long-term health and resilience. In this talk, Prof. Hong will discuss some of the key challenges linked to the contemporary urban and transportation planning, and share lessons and experiences from his research to help reimagine our cities to be healthier, more resilient and equitable as we look toward a post-pandemic future.
